At the International Epilepsy Congress in Lisbon, Portugal, ELUCID researchers Dr. Leah Blank and Dr. Emily Johnson presented new findings on the causes of seizures in older adults, based on our ELUCID Study screening data.  This dataset included information from over 2,000 adults aged 55 or older, who were newly diagnosed with seizures in the U.S. between 2021-2025.  We found that in 1 out of every 3 cases, the cause of epilepsy was unknown — making unexplained seizures the most common type of epilepsy that develops in older adults.

At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Toronto, Canada, ELUCID researcher Dr. Alice Lam presented the goals and design of the ELUCID Study, along with demographic details of our accruing ELUCID study cohort.  Connecting scientists across the fields of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease will be vital for advancing our understanding of how seizures can affect thinking and memory in older adults, and how we can protect brain health in older adults with seizures.

We were awarded a large NIH Grant to carry out the ELUCID Study — a 7-center prospective longitudinal observational study on Late-Onset Unexplained Epilepsy (LoUE).  ELUCID will help us understand the risk factors that underlie cognitive decline and dementia in individuals with LoUE and will allow us to develop tools needed to predict which individuals with LoUE are at greatest risk for developing cognitive decline and dementia.
